This was one of those spontaneous trips to the Lava Beds National Monument. I needed two pictures for my 2nd Edition, 2nd Printing Book, "Mount Shasta Guide to Fun". My history with Lava Beds National Monument started back in the early 1990's. I worked there as a YCC Crew leader and began giving bus tours after that. I still do bus tours and private tours to this area. Now is a great time to book a tour! Petroglyph Point is very unique with its carvings and and legends of how this cliff was formed. Many birds live in here too! This is the site where General Canby was murdered by Captain Jack, the leader of the Modocs during a peace offering on April 11, 1875. This is the entrance into Valentine Cave, one of my favorites! Valentine Cave with all it stalactites and interesting geologic features. This is what Bunny Flat looks like for June 11, 2019. It happens every few years where we have snow this low through June into July. Climbing season is in full swing. We've been having crazy weather this week and it looks like into the weekend! Memorial Weekend is always a mixed bag for weather. https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/96067:4:US All the waterfalls in our area are flowing great with all the snow and rain we've been having. Now's a good time to go on a scenic waterfalls tour. This guy likes to hangout at Lower McCloud Falls especially when people are fishing. Widespread and familiar (though often called "crane"), the largest heron in North America. Often seen standing silently along inland rivers or lakeshores, or flying high overhead, with slow wingbeats, its head hunched back onto its shoulders. ..Touring Castle Lake with Marisol and her mother Victoria from Southern California. This group came from all different places including New Orleans, Georgia, Southern California and Australia. The snow and weather didn't stop them having fun! This picture was taken on Mt. Shasta at 6,950 ft. A 45 minute drive north of Mt. Shasta is Greenhorn Park located in Yreka. The lupines are going off right now. Just walking through offers an incredible scent! We've been having spring like conditions for skiing, following a bit of rain in town for the wildflower blooms and yep...more snow coming this week! We always get very interesting clouds before a storm arrives. Shasta snowpack around these areas are still in great condition.
Freshies await... The gate is open!This is what it looks like at the end of the Bunny Flat Parking area where the gate is located. Yep...we have lots of snow! Here's the kiosk. Luckily someone dug a path to the restrooms. Heading up where the avalanche took place. It's pretty filled in from the recent storms. It makes for a nice skin up and ski down! This is what we live for...freshies.
First off, a BIG Thank You to the county who has done an excellent job this season keeping the mountain road and Castle Lake Road in good driving conditions. For the past week Castle Lake Road has been closed due to lots of snow. It finally opened Friday afternoon at 3:30. Yep...we got first tracks! A nice skin up to the top of Left Peak. A view of Castle Spire, Castle Crags Wilderness Gerald and Bluey ready for the descent! Skiing to a lovely sunset! The next day... Loving the nice cornice build ups along the ridges.
President's Week has brought snow, rain and snow on and around Mt. Shasta! This is a very large avalanche that occurred after a rain/snow event on the mountain. Fortunately, the gate was closed at the lower part of the mountain and nobody was up there. Untracked Freshies! Gerald Spini a native of Mt. Shasta. been climbing and skiing the mountain all his life. He holds three climbing records from the 1960's. At the age of 81, he still skis as much as possible with his dog Bluey.
The end of November has brought the goods! There's enough snow to ski and snowshoe on Mt. Shasta. Now is a great time to book a tour for the holidays! Castle Lake has received a few inches of snow so far. The road is plowed. It's always a good idea to be prepared and carry a shovel and chains. I love those early morning ski tours! My saying is, "You never know until you go"!
Shasta's famous Lenticular Clouds. What are Lenticular Clouds? They are stationary clouds that form in the troposphere typically in perpendicular alignment to the wind direction. They are often comparable in appearance to a lens or flying saucer. The Old Ski Bowl is still very inviting. Don't forget this is the last week before the gate is closed at Bunny Flat. Then it's walking, bicycling and waiting for snow! Black Butte is one of the best hikes for views of Mt. Shasta. Now is a good time to hike it. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO START THE MONTH OF OCTOBER! This month is looking really good on weather and nice temperatures. The autumn colors are starting to change with pizzazz. Snow is coming and let's hope for lots!
